Using an eSIM in Italy
For Italy, first inspect the EU roaming allowance in your existing mobile contract. If it covers your data needs for the whole stay, a second package may be unnecessary. A travel eSIM can provide a separate allowance when your home roaming is unsuitable or you are combining Italy with other destinations.
Choose the service type before comparing prices. A data-only package supports maps, messages and online bookings, but it does not include ordinary calls or SMS. If you need a local number to contact accommodation or restaurants, check that the chosen product includes one and what identification its seller requires.

Italy’s main mobile operators include TIM, Fastweb + Vodafone, WINDTRE and Iliad. A travel package may still identify its partner using a consumer network brand. Check that package’s confirmed access rather than assuming you can connect to every operator or use every network technology.
For Rome, Florence and Milan, assess coverage around accommodation and work venues. For the Dolomites, a rural Tuscan stay or a coastal road trip, check the relevant roads and overnight stops separately. National network availability does not establish continuous reception through mountain valleys or railway tunnels.

A lower price per gigabyte is not a saving if you pay for a large allowance you will not use.
