Using an eSIM in Dubai and the UAE
For a Dubai stopover or a longer UAE trip, first decide whether you need mobile data alone or a local phone number with calls. International travel eSIMs and local tourist offers serve different needs. A data-only plan can run maps and messaging, but it does not include ordinary telephone calls or SMS.
Local visitor lines are available from e& and du. Their registration process differs from buying an international roaming package. For example, e& asks visitors obtaining its line at an outlet for a valid passport and visa. Confirm the documents and eligibility for your specific offer, including whether setup is completed online or after arrival.
Voice and video calling apps are regulated in the UAE. Mobile data does not guarantee every app’s calling function. Check your chosen service before relying on it for meetings or calls home. Do not assume a travel eSIM changes these restrictions.
Mobile networks and coverage in the UAE
e& UAE, formerly branded Etisalat, and du operate the main local mobile networks. Check which network the individual travel package uses. The seller’s name is not proof of access to both networks, and 5G depends on the package, device and location.
For Dubai and Abu Dhabi, inspect coverage around your accommodation and any work venues. A drive to Fujairah, a mountain visit around Hatta or a desert excursion deserves its own route check. Coverage shown in the cities cannot establish a continuous signal on every road or away from built-up areas.

Treat operator maps as predictions, especially indoors and in remote terrain. Save meeting details, hotel addresses and excursion arrangements offline. If you need a connection throughout a tour, discuss that requirement with the organiser rather than relying on a general national-coverage claim.
