Using an eSIM in China
For mainland China, choose an eSIM by both network access and how its data is routed. A travel eSIM can use international roaming, while a local mobile connection follows a different service setup.
Apps and websites can behave differently on international roaming, local mobile connections and hotel Wi-Fi. Confirm access to essential tools with the seller of the exact package. An eSIM label alone is not a guarantee.
Check compatibility for your precise phone model and its country of purchase. Do not assume that every version of the same phone supports eSIM. A data-only package also does not provide a Chinese phone number or ordinary SMS, which can matter when a booking or account requires verification.
Complete purchase and read the setup instructions before departure where the seller supports this. Installation does not necessarily start validity, but some packages begin at installation and others at the first supported connection. Confirm the rule, save the instructions offline and keep booking details available without mobile data.
Mobile networks and coverage in China
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom are major local mobile operators. A travel eSIM may connect to one of them under its own agreement. Check the package’s named network and whether any alternative network is actually available. A seller’s general list of partners does not prove that your chosen plan can switch between them.
For Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, check the places where you will stay and work. For trips into mountain areas or less populated regions, assess the actual route separately. Neither a city coverage result nor advertised 5G access guarantees a signal through every rail tunnel or along a rural excursion.

Coverage maps describe expected radio service, not which websites will load. Ask about both if you need work applications or specific communication tools. Switching from roaming mobile data to a local Wi-Fi network can change your access conditions.

Save meeting addresses so you can show them offline. Check top-ups before running low, especially if access to the seller’s app or website is uncertain at your destination.
